OUR STORIES

Besufikad: A Journey to Healing by God’s Will

In Amharic, Besufikad means “by God’s will”—a name that fittingly reflects the miraculous journey of this baby boy.

Born on the streets of Addis Ababa to a young mother fleeing conflict, Besufikad entered the world with a life-threatening condition called anorectal malformation, which left him unable to pass stool normally. His mother, Tinsae, had already endured unimaginable hardship—displacement, homelessness, and pregnancy without support.

After an emergency colostomy, Tinsae and her newborn were discharged with nowhere to go. They found temporary refuge at a shelter, but his condition required specialized follow-up surgery.

That’s when they were referred to BethanyKids at Myungsung Christian Medical Center.

Thanks to the support of donors like you, Besufikad received the surgery he urgently needed to create a functioning anal opening. The operation was a complete success. Today, he is thriving—passing stool normally and on the road to a healthy future.

“I never thought this surgery would happen—especially not for free,” Tinsae said. “We are so thankful. You’ve changed our lives.”

Buomkouth: A Story of New Beginnings

Born in a refugee camp near Gambela, Ethiopia, Buomkouth faced a daunting start to life. Diagnosed with Bladder Exstrophy—a rare condition where the bladder is exposed outside the body—he needed complex care far beyond what his family could access.

His parents, South Sudanese refugees surviving on small-scale farming and limited aid, pursued multiple hospitals in search of help. Early surgeries failed. Still, they never gave up.

That’s when they were referred to BethanyKids.

Recognizing the urgency, our team provided full support—covering travel, housing, and surgery at BethanyKids’ program at Myungsung Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. There, Buomkouth received the Mainz Pouch procedure, a reconstructive surgery that gave him a functioning bladder.

Today, he is thriving—smiling, growing, and ready to embrace the future.

“I thank God, the staff, and everyone who financed my son’s surgery,” his mother shared. “We were cared for every step of the way.”

Thanks to compassionate donors like you, Buomkouth now has the chance to live a full life—to play, attend school, and dream beyond the camp walls.

Dabash: A Father’s Determination, A Child’s Second Chance

For over two years, four-year-old Dabash lived with an open colostomy. His family, in one of Ethiopia’s most remote and impoverished regions, couldn’t access the surgery he desperately needed. When conflict closed the road to the only hospital they’d ever known, hope all but disappeared.

Living without electricity or clean water, Dabash was vulnerable and often in pain. Chickens would peck at his colostomy site, and the odor from his condition led to social rejection. Like many children with congenital conditions in marginalized areas, he remained hidden—out of school, out of sight.

Then a local social worker told his father, Tantu, about BethanyKids in Addis Ababa. Though it seemed impossible, Tantu chose to try.

Their journey took three difficult days. Public transport drivers often refused them. With roads blocked by conflict, they crossed rivers and relied on tuk-tuks and trucks to reach the city.

At BethanyKids at Myungsung Christian Medical Center, Dabash received the surgery he had waited years for. It was a success.

“I’m truly grateful,” said Tantu. “The care was beyond anything I expected. Once he heals, I will send him to school.”

Thanks to our partnership with African Mission Healthcare—and supporters like you—Dabash now has the chance to grow, learn, and live with dignity.
